Birds

The UConn Ornithology Group does research on a wide variety of topics, some of which are focused in individual labs, but many of which engage people in multiple labs (often with direct collaboration). Some of the main areas in which we work, include: Behavior, Biomechanics and Functional Morphology, Community Ecology, Conservation, Microbiomes, and Population Biology.

The Elphick Lab studies avian conservation ecology, especially in coastal and farmland settings, habitat loss, climate change, and large-scale conservation planning.

Research in the Knutie lab spans both fundamental and applied ideas in disease ecology and evolution and studies the disease ecology of birds and amphibians, host-microbe interactions, ecotoxicology, invasive species biology, and behavioral ecology.

The Rubega Lab studies avian functional and evolutionary morphology, especially of feeding structures, feeding mechanics, functional aspects of behavior, ecology, and conservation biology.
